How to Calculate a Tip Quickly (Without an App)

Not sure how much to tip at a restaurant? The most common tip amounts in the U.S. range from 15% to 20% of your total bill before taxes. Here’s how to quickly figure out your tip amount, with or without a calculator.

Quick Tip Math Trick

To estimate a 20% tip:

• Move the decimal one place to the left (this is 10%).
• Double that number.

Example: For a $45 bill:

10% = $4.50 → 20% tip ≈ $9.00

Common Tip Percentages

• 15% → Okay service
• 18% → Good service (often pre-selected on receipts)
• 20% → Excellent service
• More for exceptional service or large groups
